How A Child Is Born: 25 Breathtaking Photos That Might Make You Cry
“These absolutely incredible photographs were taken with conventional cameras with macro lenses, an endoscope and scanning electron microscope. Pure magic.”
Swedish photographer Lennart Nilsson spent many years of his life devoted to capturing the creation of a human being – from conception to birth.
In association with researchers and with the help of advanced, specially designed equipment, he has documented the inside of man down to the level of a cell using a magnification of hundreds of thousands.
He has “worked” right inside the womb.
Take a look at this mesmerizing series that shows the formation of a baby from the very, very, very beginning. This is absolutely incredible. It is how YOU have been formed inside the womb!!
#1 A Sperm That Reached The The Fallopian Tube
If now only it could find an egg ready to accept it.. If the sperm don’t find an egg in the fallopian tubes at the time of intercourse, they can survive inside the woman for up to seven days.
#2 An Egg Cell
And here’s the queen, the egg, awaiting a healthy sperm.. The average egg lives for up to 24 hours after release. It needs to be fertilised within this time by a sperm for a baby to be conceived.
#3 The First Date
The queen, the egg, accepts only the fastest, strongest & healthiest sperm. The fastest swimmers may find the egg in as little as 45 minutes. It can take the slowest up to 12 hours.
#4 The Fallopian Tube
There are two fallopian tubes, each about 10cm in length, which lead from the ovaries to the uterus.
#5 Two sperms Make Contact With The Egg Cell
For the lucky few sperm cells that get near the egg, the race isn’t over. Each one has to work frantically to penetrate the egg’s outer shell and get inside before the others.
#6 The Winning Sperm
When the hardiest sperm of the bunch makes it through, the egg changes instantaneously to prevent any others getting in. It’s like a protective shield that clamps down over the egg.
#7 Winning Moments
The combined sperm and egg is called a zygote. The zygote contains all of the genetic information (DNA) needed to become a baby.
#8 {5 to 6 Days} The Clump Has Developed & Has Entered The Womb
This bundle of new cells (later called blastocyst) continues travelling down the fallopian tube towards the uterus, a journey which can take another three days or so.
#9 {8 Days} The Embryo Is Attached To A Wall Of The Uterus
A woman is not actually pregnant until the blastocyst has attached itself to the wall of her uterus. Here it will develop into an embryo and placenta.
#10 The Brain Starts To Develop
#11 {24 Days} A Heart Starts Beating
#12 {6 Weeks}
#13 {5 Weeks} Approx. 9 mm. You Can Distinguish The Face With Holes For Eyes, Nostrils & Mouth
#14 {40 Days} Embryonic cells form the placenta
The placenta connects the embryo to the uterine wall allowing nutrient uptake, waste elimination and gas exchange via the woman’s blood supply
#15 The Embryo Is Protected In The Fetal Sac
#16 {7 Weeks} The Eyelids Will Close Completely In A Few Days
#17 {16 Weeks} The Foetus Uses Its Hands To Explore Its Own Body & Its Surroundings
#18 A Network Of Blood Vessels Is Visible Through The Thin Skin
#19 {18 Weeks} Approx. 14 cm. The Foetus Can Perceive Sounds From The Outside World
#20 {19 Weeks}
#21 {20 Weeks} Approx. 20 cm. Woolly Hair, Known As Lanugo, Covers The Entire Head
#22 {24 Weeks}
#23 {26 Weeks} Footprints and fingerprints are forming.
#24 {6 Months} The Little Human Is Getting Ready To Leave The Uterus
#25 {36 Weeks} The Child Will See The World In 4 Weeks
[sociallocker id=10695]Now tell me.. ain’t that pure magic? Don’t these photographs open up some more questions? Questions such as Who created this miraculous process of creation? How can it be that you and I were formed by pure thoughts.. then by a cluster of cells.. and now I am sitting here writing you these lines?!
All my love to you, Adina

Lindsey, I was really touched by the honesty and candor of your comment. Many of my friends have expressed the very same feelings and fears in facing motherhood. What it takes is a community of loving and supportive people. People who will be there for you, and your wee one, through all of the questions and fears and joys you are just starting to taste.
If you look around and don’t see any, find them. Search high and low. Put up posters if they are hiding. Ask for help, like you did here. Ask everyone. Walk away from people who don’t jump up to say yes. Moms and babes need a world of support. Don’t we all?
Hang in there. It might be that little face that moves your heart…it might not happen until the most random moment, months into being a Momma. Be patient with your heart, and honour what it’s feeling. We’re rooting for you x
There was no creator. Childbirth is an evolved process.
I found out in my fifth month that I am pregnant. I have never wanted kids and I am having a difficult time with reality. Every day is a struggle. I am doing my best to get out of bed, just to get out of bed. There is so much I need to do in order to get ready for her arrival. But I am not excited in any way. I wish I could get on board. What does it take?
“What does it take?” One breath, one step, one day at a time.
Life threw you a curveball, but you will make it. A Lady always does.
Bless your precious gift. 🙂
