12 Ways to Naturally Heal a Vaginal Infection

12 Ways to Naturally Heal a Vaginal Infection

About Me

I am a qualified natural nutritionist who has a passion for helping people learn to eat right and feel great. I hold a diploma in Natural Nutrition obtained in the UK from The College of Natural Nutrition, and I am currently studying towards a diploma in life coaching through New Horizons College UK.

Your vagina deserves only the best care, and the same applies ladies when you have a vaginal infection. Many conventional treatments you can get given to treat an infection in this area can come with a long list of side effects, plus can even cause it to recur.

Natural Medicine over Chemicals

If your infection is in the beginning stages or you have already come to the end of your tether trying conventional medicines prescribed from either your doctor or simply bought from your local pharmacy why not try taking matters into your own hands and try treating it naturally as nature intended?

Below, I have listed 12 natural ways you could heal your vaginal infection and could get relatively quick relief from these annoying and depressing vaginal infections!  Some cases of vaginal infection can take longer than others to heal with natural medicine or remedies, the reason being because you aim to treat the root cause of the problem and not just the symptoms.

The 12 Secrets against Vaginal Infections

#1 Organic Garlic

Garlic has both antiviral and antibacterial properties, which means they are better than antibiotics which can only ‘treat’ bacterial infections. The great thing about garlic though is that it comes without the horrible side effects antibiotics can cause. Garlic also can kill a yeast infection, which if this is what is behind your vaginal infection – will be welcomed greatly. The key to making garlic work well for you is to start applying it when the infection is in the early stages.

#2 Organic Grapefruit Seed Extract & Tea Tree Oil

Vaginal infections are often caused by bacteria, fungi, or parasites. When you have one, it is important you don’t use any soaps or perfumed products at all on the area, but instead try adding a few drops of grapefruit seed extract (with a little tea tree oil too if you have some) to the water you use for washing.

Try the following vaginal rinse for at least one week: Add 1 to 3 drops of grapefruit seed extract to a 150ml to 200ml glass of warm purified water and mix well. Next, take up this mixture into a commercially available syringe (one without a needle), carefully insert, and squirt the mixture into the vagina. To do this, lie on your back and lift your pelvis. Repeat every 12 hours during the first 3 days of the treatment, then once a day until the infection clears.

#3 Wipe from Front to Back

Take extra care to keep your vaginal area clean and dry by ensuring you only ever wipe yourself from front to back after urinating or having a bowel movement. Also, if you know you have a yeast infection you should never wash until the infection has cleared up, because yeast loves water and it could make the infection grow faster.

#4 Probiotics

Probiotics are a popular natural remedy for yeast infection. They are live microbial organisms that are naturally present in the digestive tract and vagina. Probiotics, sometimes referred to as “friendly” bacteria, suppress the growth of potentially harmful organisms such as Candida, which is why probiotic supplements have been explored as a natural remedy for yeast infection. The most popular and well documented probiotic strains well known for successfully treating yeast infections are; Lactobacillus, especially Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1, and Lactobacillus fermentum RC-14. It is thought that women with low levels of these probiotics are at the most risk for getting a yeast infection.

#5 Dry & Airy

Until your vaginal infection has resolved, it is advised to wear no underwear or lingerie as doing so could contribute to keeping the infection spreading due to the excess moisture build up that happens. The main offenders are those that are tight and restrict air getting to the area. If you have to wear underwear, then go for 100% cotton underwear in the day only, and go commando at night time to allow the vagina to breathe and ventilate properly.

#6 Secret Ceres

Secret Ceres is a holistic pebble type looking vaginal insert that during trials on women of the product had a 95% successful treatment of vaginal infections. Secret Ceres is made of completely natural, organic materials: kaolin (white clay), punica granatum (pomegranate fruit), and dripstones (calcium carbonate crystals). Secret Ceres’ active ingredients and antifungal and antibacterial properties effectively counteract conditions that arise as a result of the state of imbalance of the flora, such as fungal infections (vaginal candidiasis), vaginal dryness, inflammation of the vagina (vaginitis), unpleasant odour (vaginosis), or discharge (leucorrhoea). Remember to read all instructions carefully with this product, and note that the stick should not be inserted fully as the drying action of the kaolin will make it difficult to remove.

#7 Yeast Away™

This is a product designed to eliminate yeast infections from the body. It contains cellulase enzymes and prebiotics that attack the overgrowth of Candida organisms that may lead to symptoms such vaginal infections. The cellulase enzymes help to rupture Candida’s cell wall, allowing the body to digest the yeast without releasing any toxins. It also contains three powerful probiotics to help replenish the body’s potentially low reserves.

#8 Apple Cider Vinegar Baths

Apple cider baths may bring some much needed relief to ending your vaginal infection. Try having an apple cider bath (using organic and raw apple cider ONLY) once a day for as many days as needed until you see a resolution. All you need to do is immerse your vagina in a shallow water bath (usually referred to as a ‘sitz’ bath) with ½ cup of organic, raw apple cider vinegar. Keep your legs spread wide apart at all times during the sitz bath, so the water can flow freely around your vaginal region. If you do not have a bath, then try using a bath intended for a baby. Apple cider baths have had great results for many women, and experts believe it is due to apple cider being able to inhibit the growth of yeast by killing them with its strong acidic pH level.

#9 Avoid Antibiotics

Antibiotics kill off both the good and bad bacteria and yeasts living in your digestive tract, and other various parts of your body. What this means is with not much good bacteria around, more negative bacteria and yeast types have a chance to grow out of control as nothing is there to stop it. So this means your vaginal infection effectively will only recur.

#10 Supplement with Vitamin C

Take at least 500 mg – 1000mg of vitamin C daily for 8 weeks (magnesium ascorbate is the gentlest form and least acidic). Vitamin C can help reduce inflammation associated with infection and boost your immune system to aid your body in the fight against your vaginal infection.

#11 Supplement with Omega 3 Fish Oil

Taking a pure omega 3, from smaller fish like anchovies that is less contaminated with toxic heavy metals, can also help to reduce the amount of inflammation and tissue swelling you have in and around your vaginal area when an infection is present. Try a dose of 1000mg – 2000mg a day for 2 months.

#12 Avoid Sexual Intercourse, & Tampons when you have a Vaginal Infection

To really ensure you are doing all you can to heal your vaginal infection naturally, you really should avoid having sex to reduce your chances of spreading it, and to avoid irritating and inflaming the area more. If you get your period whilst treating the vaginal infection, then ensure you use organic 100% cotton tampons and sanitary towels to avoid any chemicals that are on the conventional store bought ones that can cause further irritation down there.

Consult your doctor if you are on medication

Whilst we really like to encourage and empower you to take control of your health problems yourself, there are two instances you may need to consult with your naturopathic doctor. One is if you are on any medication as you must ensure you discuss any new supplements you would like to take with your doctor or naturopathic doctor beforehand, as some supplements cannot be taken with certain drugs. Secondly, for severe cases that do not respond to any of the above suggestions for treating a vaginal infection naturally, then it’s probably time to make an appointment with your naturopathic doctor, or nutritionist.
