OMG, this amazing new study reveals how particular emotions e.g. love, fear, happiness, anger, pride etc. affect our bodies. And the bodily sensations experienced during certain emotional states are universal, regardless of culture and language.

“More than 700 participants in Finland, Sweden and Taiwan participated in experiments aimed at mapping their bodily sensations in connection with specific emotions. Participants viewed emotion-laden words, videos, facial expressions and stories. They then self-reported areas of their bodies that felt different than before they’d viewed the material. By coloring in two computer-generated silhouettes — one to note areas of increased bodily sensation and the second to mark areas of decreased sensation — participants were able to provide researchers with a broad base of data showing both positive and negative bodily responses to different emotions.”

THE BODILY ATLAS OF EMOTIONS

Emotions such as anger and fear, caused an increase in sensation  in the upper chest area along with an increase in pulse and respiration rate. Happiness was the only emotion tested that increased sensation all over the body, closely followed by love, sadness heavy on my heart,

This map touched me so deeply as I have felt almost each of these sensations in the same areas of my body: Shame through my eyes, love through my heart, happiness all over my body, envy in my head, anger like fire in my upper body etc.

THE POWERFUL MESSAGE BEHIND THIS MAP

To me the message of this map is not to reveal that love and happiness are more important and healthy to be felt in the body. I am a big advocate of pain. It is important to the personal growth of a human being to feel a certain level of “healthy” emotional pain. How else could we feel happiness if we would have never felt sadness?

The great lesson from this map to me is to become more aware and conscious of the bodily sensations experienced during certain emotions. Sometime we are in the middle of an anxiety attack, jealousy or full of anger and are not aware of our body and reactions anymore. We become like a robot device – not in charge of our emotions. We do and say things to our partner, lover, friend we later wish we would have never said or done. Coming back to the sensation of our body, feeling them, acknowledging them helps to calm down.

Next time you are angry, sad, jealous or afraid go within. Feel your body. Do not judge what you feel. Just tell yourself: “This too shall pass”. Trust me: It is very powerful and empowering to become in charge of your body and emotions.

All emotions are there to help us. No emotion is bad. Some are just more exhausting and destructive then others. But without one the other could not be. It is all a matter how we deal and react on certain emotions.

Much love, Adina
